The Bangkok Ten

Ten unmissable experiences

Bangkok can be overwhelming in the best possible way. There is always another temple, market, restaurant, neighbourhood or bar somebody insists you have to visit. You don't have to see everything. These are the ten experiences we think matter most.

Wat Phra Kaew roofs and gilded pagodas within the Grand Palace precinct.
01 · THE BANGKOK TEN

The Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew

Crowded, dazzling and completely unmissable.

There are occasions when the obvious choice is also the right one. The Grand Palace is one of them. Built after Bangkok became the capital in 1782, the complex remains one of the great symbols of the Thai monarchy. Within it stands Wat Phra Kaew, home to the revered Emerald Buddha.

Golden stupas, mirrored mosaics, guardian figures, murals and elaborate roofs compete for your attention in almost every direction. And yes, it gets busy. That doesn't make it less important.

02 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Wat Pho

Come for the Buddha. Stay for the temple.

At 46 metres long, Wat Pho's Reclining Buddha understandably gets most of the photographs. But reducing Wat Pho to a single enormous statue misses much of what makes the place special.

Wander beyond it and you'll find courtyards, colourful chedis, statues and quieter corners. Wat Pho also occupies an important place in the history of traditional Thai medicine and massage.

CRUCIAL TIP: Once you've seen the Reclining Buddha, deliberately walk away from the exit. Some of Wat Pho's loveliest moments are elsewhere in the complex.
Chao Phraya boats, riverside activity and Wat Arun across the water.
03 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Wat Arun & the Chao Phraya

The boat isn't merely how you get to Wat Arun. The river is part of the experience.

Wat Arun's porcelain-covered prang is one of Bangkok's defining landmarks. Seen close up, its decoration is far more intricate than the familiar skyline photographs suggest. But this Crucial Ten experience begins before you reach the temple.

Take to the Chao Phraya. The river is transport route, workplace, neighbourhood and stage — and one of the best places from which to understand Bangkok.

From the water you see commuter ferries, working boats, riverside homes and communities, temple roofs, luxury hotels and modern towers sharing one constantly changing skyline. Public boats make this one of Bangkok's great inexpensive experiences, with Wat Arun as the perfect focal point.

CRUCIAL TIP: Don't simply take the shortest ferry across. Build a proper Chao Phraya journey into the day. Sit by the side of the boat, watch Bangkok unfold from the water and use the river as Bangkokians do—as a way through the city.
Yaowarat neon and evening Chinatown street activity.
04 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Chinatown: Yaowarat After Dark

Don't choose one restaurant. Make the neighbourhood your restaurant.

Bangkok is one of the world's great eating cities, and Yaowarat is one of the most exhilarating places to understand why. After dark, neon signs illuminate the street, food stalls appear and the neighbourhood becomes a moving feast.

Walk. Look. Smell. Stop. Try something grilled, share a bowl of noodles, order something you don't recognise, have dessert and start again. The wider Chinatown area adds temples, markets and generations of Chinese influence on Bangkok life.

CRUCIAL TIP: Go hungry and share dishes if you can. Four half-portions are much more interesting than one enormous dinner.
A narrow aisle lined with busy Chatuchak market stalls.
05 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Chatuchak Weekend Market

You will not see all of Chatuchak. Stop trying.

Thousands of stalls sell clothing, art, ceramics, plants, furniture, vintage objects, souvenirs, food and things you didn't know existed until shortly before buying them.

Approach Chatuchak as something to explore rather than complete. Pick a few areas, wander down whichever alley looks promising, stop for food and accept that you'll probably never find that brilliant stall again.

CRUCIAL TIP: Go early. Bangkok heat plus Chatuchak crowds plus several hours of walking is considerably less charming at 1pm.

06 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Watch Muay Thai at Rajadamnern

Even if you don't normally watch combat sports, give this one an evening.

Muay Thai changes when experienced live. The music, ritual, rhythm of the bouts, crowd and explosive sound of a clean strike create something television doesn't reproduce.

Rajadamnern opened in 1945 and played an important role in the development of professional Muay Thai. Go for the fighting—but pay attention to everything happening around it.

07 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Bangkok from a Rooftop at Sunset

Arrive in daylight. Leaving it until after dark misses half the point.

At street level Bangkok can feel impossibly dense. From high above, its scale becomes visible: the Chao Phraya, expressways, towers and enormous urban horizon.

The best moment is the transition. Arrive before sunset, watch the heat soften and then stay while millions of lights switch on below. We don't prescribe one permanent rooftop winner; venues and prices change. The experience is what matters.

CRUCIAL TIP: Research the orientation of your chosen rooftop and reserve early enough to experience both daylight and darkness.
Traditional timber buildings and lush grounds at Jim Thompson House.
08 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Jim Thompson House

Compact, beautiful and exactly the change of pace your itinerary probably needs.

Traditional teak houses, tropical planting and Southeast Asian art create a world away from the surrounding shopping district. Jim Thompson helped develop an international market for Thai silk after the Second World War and assembled the house from traditional Thai structures.

Then comes the mystery: Thompson disappeared in Malaysia's Cameron Highlands in 1967. The story is compelling, but the architecture, gardens and collection are reason enough to come.

Traditional Thai massage, Thailand
09 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Have a Traditional Thai Massage

Your legs will appreciate it. But it belongs here for reasons beyond tired feet.

Nuad Thai is part of Thailand's cultural heritage, combining pressure, stretching and manipulation with deep connections to traditional healthcare. UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019.

Bangkok offers everything from neighbourhood massage shops to luxury spas. Wat Pho has the strongest historical connection, with its traditional medical and massage school building on the temple's older association with medical knowledge.

10 · THE BANGKOK TEN

Get Lost in Talat Noi & Charoen Krung

No blockbuster attraction. That's precisely why it's here.

Talat Noi is an old riverside neighbourhood shaped by generations of Chinese migration, trade and industry. Narrow lanes reveal shrines, weathered shophouses, workshops, street art and increasingly stylish cafés occupying buildings with much longer histories.

There isn't one thing you're supposed to photograph and tick off. The pleasure lies in noticing Bangkok change from alley to alley: heritage beside contemporary art, mechanics beside coffee culture, ordinary neighbourhood life beside the visitor trail.

Make it happen

Bangkok at a glance

When to go

November to February is generally the easiest period for sightseeing, with lower humidity and more comfortable conditions—although Bangkok remains warm.

How long?

Three full days gives a strong introduction. Four is our sweet spot for a first visit; five gives you room to slow down.

Getting around

Use the BTS and MRT for modern Bangkok, boats along the Chao Phraya, and taxis or ride-hailing to fill the gaps. Walk when the heat allows it.

The Crucial Ten rule

Don't complete the Ten just because they're numbered. Choose what matters to you and give it enough time. The aim is less research and a better trip—not a busier holiday.

Practical prices, schedules and visitor information shown here were checked October 2026 and should be verified with official sources before travel.
